George Wythe Society of Citizen Lawyers

About

William & Mary Law School was founded in 1779 on the ideal of the Citizen Lawyer. The school's Citizen Lawyer mission started with its founding scholar, George Wythe, and continues with the George Wythe Society of Citizen Lawyers. Through a variety of activities, the George Wythe Society of Citizen Lawyers strives to preserve this fundamental philosophy and challenge tomorrow's lawyers to be leaders within their community—to thrive and to give back at every turn.

Our organization hosts events with prominent speakers, facilitates student success, participates in and organizes community service, legal services and professional development, organizes experiential learning events, and facilitates debate on pertinent issues with our annual Mock Legislature.

The George Wythe Society traces its roots back to the 1921 Wythe Law Club, a student organization committed to the ideals that George Wythe—the first law professor in America—embodied.  Today, we continue this mission.

The group remains and has always been strictly non-partisan, open to collaborating with all student groups to increase opportunities for students to enhance their legal mastery and exposure to the legal world.

Furthermore, in the tradition of George Wythe, this group focuses on service and professional development, indeed working closely with OCS and other employers. This group is to be a working group, not a passive group.  This is about active engagement and our ability to succeed by lending our efforts and hours to the aim of creating amazing professionals who we are proud to be. We are committed to creating an environment and opportunities where students can flourish--where William and Mary can raise them to become excellent lawyers who succeed, give back, and take the lead themselves as stewards of the future.
